Asynchronous processing with AWS API Gateway and SNS

Asynchronous processing with AWS API Gateway and SNS

When you want to build an asynchronous endpoint that can receive your request and process the task(s) in the background, AWS services can be used to achieve that. The technique I cover here allows for parallel asynchronous processing not just asynchronous. The two important services we need are API Gateway and SNS.

AWS API Gateway

AWS API Gateway can act as a proxy for your backend endpoints or lambda function or many AWS Services including SNS. Remember the maximum execution time cannot exceed 29 seconds.

Amazon Web services have N number of services, one among them is Aws Identity and Access Management(IAM). IAM allows you to securely access the AWS services.

Using IAM you can control the who can use your AWS service and what resource they can use. With IAM, you can create and manage AWS users and groups, and use permissions to allow and deny their access to AWS resources.

We can integrate IAM with many platforms like NodeJS, .NET, Java etc., Here we can see how to use AWS IAM with PHP platform.
require '/path/to/aws-autoloader.php';

Font Awesome Woff2 failing to load from Amazon CloudFront

Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network (CDN) offered by Amazon Web Services. Content delivery networks provide a globally-distributed network of proxy servers which cache content, such as web videos or other bulky media, more locally to consumers, thus improving access speed for downloading the content.

I had a strange issue which prevented loading of woff2 type Font Awesome fonts from Amazon CloudFront on our Drupal website. The error message as reported on Google Chrome Console is as below,

EBS Volume in Linux

Expanding the Storage Space of an EBS Volume on Linux

This guide applies to increase the root volume size of an EBS EC2 Linux instance on AWS. By default, most Linux instances come with an 8GB root volume unless you changed it at first launch. If you are one of the people that forgot to do this or you just simply need to extend the volume take a look at this guide.

I started out with an Amazon Linux instance and an 8GB volume.

CDN Module, and Amazon Cloudfront in Drupal 7

Recently I decided to check out Amazon CloudFront to use it as a CDN. I felt delighted as it was so easy to setup with drupal and configuring it involves just a few steps. Another thing that excited me was its cost. It is really really cheap, just costs about 12 cents per gigabyte of transfer.

Step 1: Create a CloudFront Web Distribution

Uploading files to Amazon S3 using PHP

At KnackForge we offer hosting services to most of the sites and applications we develop. Being a small team we try to automate most of our processes, and here is an attempt to make it for backup, archive and upload to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).

If you are reading this post you are probably more aware of the essence of backup. This post starts with a bit of introduction to S3 and goes along with a simple case script together with brief explanation.
